Writing advice on how to polish your novel

To become a better writer, you must know your limitations

I am sure everyone has heard that if you keeping doing what you’re doing, you keep getting what you have. And, if you keep doing the same thing you will never improve your writing skills. We are all creatures of habit so to speak and that is why it is important to learn to know what you are doing wrong.

Many times a writer will do one error so often it becomes common place and hard for the writer to recognize. Yes, when someone points it out the error is obvious. The trick is to establish a method of discovering the errors when you polish your novel. This system can be in many forms and has to be tailored specifically for your writing.

When an error is noticed in the writing the chances of it happening again many times is highly likely. Some people keep a polishing book with these errors in them. Others keep it on the computer as a polishing check. By using the Find button on the computer and inputting the error the computer will scan for the error.   The first time you do this you will be amazed at just how many times you repeat certain errors.

The kind of errors you can search for can consist of certain misspelled words that sometimes can be hard to spot. A good example is “from” for “from” or “from” for “form”. The regular spell check will not catch this and it has to be examined one by one if you have a problem with these words. This, of course, is only one example. I’m sure you will discover many others over time that relates specifically to your writing.

Another example to search for is passive word; the “to be” words that need to be rewritten in a more active voice. And the use of filler words and nondescript words can be reviewed. Many times words ending in “ly” can be eliminated. I am sure you can see the list is endless.

The important part of any list you use is that you review it often and while you are writing. Eventually the way you write the first time will improve. This will make the process of writing much easier with less time needed to polish.
